Who will benefit
This course is aimed at those people who have responsibility for managing and developing the performance of others and have been assigned a mentoring role or who act as informal mentors in coaching and developing others
Objectives
This workshop is designed to prepare participants to successfully become a mentor and establish and build a productive mentoring relationship. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary. It encourages participants to consider their roles and responsibilities as a mentor, share expectations for the relationship and draw up a contract of how the mentoring sessions should be conducted
By the end of this course you will
- Understand the ideal characteristics and skills needed in order to be an effective mentor
- Be able to define and differentiate coaching and mentoring and their applications
- Understand the background to mentoring and how it works, the benefits and the issues involved in ensuring the success of a mentoring relationship
- Understand the nature of mentoring and the roles and responsibilities of both mentor and mentee
- Identify and practice the skills necessary to become an effective mentor including developing trust, empathy and building rapport
- Convey ideas and information effectively and develop great questioning and listening skills
- Help individuals to build confidence in their own judgement
- Learn how to structure an effective mentoring session
- Evaluate sessions to ensure continuous improvement and identify actions or agenda items for follow up
